Good to know

Matcha is unique among green teas because the entire tea leaf is consumed, rather than infused and discarded. This means matcha naturally delivers a higher concentration of bioactive compounds compared to regular green tea.

Scientific reviews highlight matcha as a rich source of catechins, particularly EGCG, as well as L-theanine, caffeine, chlorophyll and polyphenols. Together, these compounds are associated with antioxidant activity and may help protect cells against oxidative stress.

The combination of L-theanine and caffeine is of particular interest. Research suggests this pairing may contribute to a state of calm alertness, supporting focus and mental clarity while avoiding the sharp stimulation often linked to coffee.

Matcha also contains naturally occurring chlorophyll, amino acids and micronutrients, which are influenced by traditional cultivation methods such as shading the tea plants before harvest.

While current findings from laboratory, animal and limited human studies are promising, further human research is needed to fully understand the mechanisms of action and long-term effects of matcha consumption.
